Top Contenders Shine on Day 1 at the CCAA Badminton Championship

The first day of competition at the CCAA Badminton Nationals saw intense matchups and standout performances across all categories, with top contenders asserting their dominance and new challengers making their mark. In men’s singles, reigning CCAA Player of the Year Thomas Ashton (ACAA1) remained undefeated, showing why he is the defending champion. Matching his strong start was Timothy Lock (OCAA1 - Humber), who made an impressive CCAA national debut by also going unbeaten. Close behind them, last year’s bronze medalist Smit Patel (NAIT - ACAC1) and rookie Hossein Ahmadi (TKU - ACAC1) secured their spots in the top four, setting the stage for a competitive battle ahead. The women’s singles competition saw a familiar name at the top, as Ritu Shah (UKC - ACAA1), the two-time defending champion, continued her dominance with a flawless 3-0 record. Her teammate and rookie competitor Akshaya Jayakeerthi (UKC - ACAA2) put up a strong showing at 2-1, while Emma Tran (CUE - ACAC1) and Sienna Pricca (SAIT - ACAC2), both making their first CCAA national appearances, closed out the day at 2-1 and 1-2, respectively. In men’s doubles, the pair of Jordan Lau and Anthony Tso (Seneca - OCAA1) led the pack with a perfect 3-0 record, demonstrating their strength on the court. Chasing them closely, Raphael Motel and Jonathan Su (CUE - ACAC2), as well as Carl Canillo and Paul Ouano (SAIT - ACAC1), finished the day with solid 2-1 records. Ben Broadbent and Mike Ta (MTA - ACAA1) rounded out the field at 1-2. The women’s doubles draw was highlighted by the dominant performance of Shruti Joshi and Ayushi Vasava (Humber - OCAA2), who emerged as the only undefeated pair at 3-0. A tight race unfolded behind them, with Ziyu Kong and Archelle Ouano (SAIT - ACAC1), Anna Gillies and Rachel Gillies (UKC - ACAA1), and Kaylee Choi and Sarah Song (George Brown - OCAA1) all finishing Day 1 with 2-1 records, keeping the competition wide open. Mixed doubles brought an electrifying start, with defending champion Mahdi Ahmadi (TKU - ACAC1) and his rookie partner Melissa Roque, the CCAA Female Player of the Year, making an emphatic statement by going 3-0. Matching their perfect start was the dynamic duo of Dhruvkumar Ruval and Sherry Wu (Humber - OCAA1), who also remained undefeated. Meanwhile, last year’s silver medalist Krishna Bhatta and Sydney Arseneault (UNBSJ - ACAA1), along with Davis Wong and Khushi Vaniya (NAIT - ACAC2), closed out the day with 1-2 records, leaving plenty of room for movement as the competition continues. With the opening day setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament, all eyes are now on Day 2 as players and teams push toward national titles. |
