The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce that Michael Chmielewski of Dynamiques collège Jean-de-Brébeuf has been named the 2026 Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
Beyond on-court success, Chmielewski has played a pivotal role in developing student-athletes both academically and personally. Over the past 15 years at Brébeuf, he has overseen a program where 100% of recruited student-athletes have achieved academic success in rigorous programs, while several players are now moving on to university-level basketball, including Mael Coutou (UQAM) and Vincent McLean-Ritchie (McGill or Concordia). “Michael Chmielewski’s vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the personal and athletic growth of his student-athletes have transformed his team into a disciplined, united, and resilient group,” said Laurent Péloquin, Technicien animateur à la vie sportive. “A calm and strategic thinker, his human-centered approach has not only elevated performance on the court but also fostered a culture of excellence that inspires and unites everyone around him.” Chmielewski’s impact extends beyond basketball. He is actively involved with organizations such as Jeunesse au Soleil, supporting underprivileged youth in Montréal through programs that promote education, physical activity, and community development. His holistic approach to coaching emphasizes resilience, empathy, and leadership, helping student-athletes thrive in sport, school, and life. CCAA Coach of the year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA National Championship banquet.
