Daniel Calvo is a CCAA Torchbearer

St. Thomas University economics student Daniel Calvo has been selected as the recipient of the Torchbearer Scholarship for his outstanding contributions to the Global Brigades program. Global Brigades is an international non-profit organization that collaborates with universities to address worldwide community health and economic needs. Over the past year, the organization has focused on providing immersive experiences for students interested in the business and economic sectors through its Business Brigades initiative. These brigades allow students to gain practical insights while supporting communities in developing countries facing economic recovery. "I am thrilled to merge my passions for community service and business—it’s truly rewarding,” said Calvo. “Helping entrepreneurs succeed in their ventures is a profound experience, and I'm grateful to the CCAA and Hudl for honouring me with the Torchbearer Scholarship.” “This recognition fuels my commitment to continue making a positive impact in the lives of small business owners worldwide,” added Calvo.
Last year, despite challenges, Calvo and his team were determined to make a difference. Through their relentless efforts, they successfully fundraised $20,000 to support a group of 8 students in traveling to Greece for an in-person brigade. During their time in Greece, the students provided business consulting services to small business owners, aiding them in their recovery efforts. One group of students rebranded a small convenience store owned by a Bangladeshi immigrant, while another group conducted financial analysis and workshops for a Pakistani small business owner. Building on the previous year's success, Calvo and his team are gearing up for another impactful endeavor. This year, at the end of April, they worked with another group of eight students in a Business Brigade in Panama, with expectations set on achieving even greater outcomes. “Daniel’s involvement with Global Brigades showcases his leadership and compassion for the global community,” said Erin Feicht, Career Development Advisor at St-Thomas University. “This past year, I had the pleasure of traveling to Greece on a Brigade with Daniel, where I witnessed firsthand his ability to connect with those struggling financially. “He built a trusting relationship with the business owners and demonstrated to the rest of the team exactly what it looks like to make meaningful connections and adapt to challenging situations.” |

Calvo's journey with Global Brigades began during his first year at St. Thomas University, when he joined the Global Brigades club as a general member. Recognizing the club's untapped potential and the absence of immersive experiences for students in Business and Economics, Calvo took on a leadership role in his third year.
