WVB: Recap from Day 1 at Holland
Match 1: Red Deer Queens 3, MSVU Mystics 0
The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens punched their ticket to the CCAA Championship semi-finals on Friday when they defeated the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in straight sets.
After set wins of 25-19 in the first two sets, a win of 25-16 in the third secured the victory for the Queens.
Tess Pearman (Queens) led the way with 11 kills while teammate, Emma Letkeman (Queens) recorded 36 assists, and McKenna Olson had a match-high five service aces. Becca MacDonnell (Mystics) led the way with 14 digs in the match.
Sydney Rix (Queens) and Becca MacDonnell (Mystics) were the 4Imprint Players of the Match.
Match 2: VIU Mariners 3, Lynx d’Édouard-Montpetit 1
The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners advanced to the CCAA Championship semi-finals on Friday after taking down the Lynx du Cégep d’Édouard-Montpetit Lynx in four-sets.
After a 26-24 win in the first, the Mariners dropped the second by a score of 25-21. The Mariners went on to pick up strong victories in the third and fourth by scores of 25-19 and 25-20.
Anica Pineault (Lynx) led the match with 18 kills while Ariane Provencher (Lynx) recorded 40 assists and Ilona Milan (Lynx) recorded a match-high 16 digs. Keira Christensen (Mariners) recorded a game-high three service aces.
The 4Imprint Players of the Match were Danielle Groenendijk (VIU) and Oriane Racine (Édouard-Montpetit).
Match 3: Humber Hawks 3, Holland Hurricanes 0
The Humber College Hawks defeated the hosts from Holland College on Friday to advance to the CCAA Championship semi-finals. The Hawks took the win in straight-sets after wins of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-20.
Keyome Ellis (Hawks) led the attack with 12 kills while Alex Bartmann (Hawks) recorded 33 assists and teammate, Alex Lachapelle (Hawks) recorded a match-high, 12 digs. Sam Gerbig (Hurricanes) was strong from the service line, recording four aces in the match.
Alex Bartmann (Humber) and Ava Beisal (Holland) were named the 4Imprint Players of the Match.
Match 4: Douglas Royals 3, Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface 0
The four semi-final teams were solidified on Friday evening when the Douglas College Royals swept the Université de Saint-Boniface in straight-sets.
Scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-22 gave the Royals the victory.
Douglas led both sides statistically in the match, with Talie Attieh leading in kills with 15. Jane Kepler recorded 36 assists, Grace McGillivray and Ava Bosa each had two service aces, and Logan Richter was solid with 18 digs in the match.
Talia Attieh (Douglas) and Brielle Grenier (Saint-Boniface) were the 4Imprint Players of the Match.
Day 2 Preview
With wins by Red Deer, VIU, Humber and Douglas, semi-final Saturday is set. The Queens will face the Mariners, while the Hawks will face the Royals.
Medal hopes are still alive for the four losing teams from Friday, as two bronze medal quarter-final matches will take place on Saturday. The Mystics will face the Lynx, while the Hurricanes will challenge Les Rouges.
