CCAA Women's Soccer: Quarter-finals Recap


Match 1 : Les Nomades de Montmorency 1, VIU Mariners 0 The 2024 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship kicked off at Capilano University Squamish Wednesday, with a 1-0 victory for les Nomades de Collège Montmorency over PACWEST champion Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners. Snowcapped local mountains set the backdrop for the start of Day 1 and VIU pushed into Montmorency territory early with Jade Dillabough narrowly missing on a breakaway chance in the opening moments. The Mariners remained on the front foot, earning two corner kicks in the 12th minute but couldn’t convert as Nomades defenders held the fort. Montmorency began to turn the tide as the first half wore on with Béatrice Plouffe sending a drive from the 18-yard-box off a VIU defender and off the post. The Quebec side kept the pressure on and were rewarded just before halftime on a set piece. A free kick was redirected off the back of the head of Jade Béchette and past the outstretched hands of a diving Kaiden Thorpe in the VIU goal. It proved to be the only scoring of the match. In the second half, les Nomades kept VIU at arm’s length, not allowing them to get organized in the attacking third of the field. Match 2 : Seneca Sting 2, Brandon Bobcats 0 Game 2 of opening day at the CCAA Women’s Soccer Nationals featured the defending champion and No. 1-ranked team in the country, the Seneca Sting, and they showed their class by scoring a goal in each half to claim a 2-0 over MCAC champion Brandon University Bobcats. The Manitoba side held their own over the first half, despite the Sting maintaining the bulk of possession and pushing their attack toward the Bobcats goal. The match was still a stalemate until injury time of the first half when Seneca was awarded a free kick just outside the Brandon 18-yard-box. Veteran Yoana Peralta Fernandez was tapped to take the kick, and though she was looking for a teammate to get on the end of her bending drive, nobody could get to it and it curled just inside the post for what turned out to be the winning goal. Seneca seemed to effortlessly maintain possession by regroup and using their midfield to get the ball across the pitch. Brandon did what they could to prevent Seneca from getting repeated looks at the net but the Sting capitalized again in the second half on a wonder strike from distance with Martina Pannia driving a blast over the head of the Brandon keeper to put the game out of reach. 4imprint Players of the Game: Brandon: Mackenzie Boyes Seneca: Yoana Peralta Fernandez

*Match 3 : Concordia Thunder 1, MSVU Mystics 0 (4-2 PKs)* Emma Derechey’s penalty-kick winner secured a 1-0 victory for the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder over the Mount St. Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics Wednesday afternoon as the sides played scoreless through regulation time. It was a chess match from the get-go as CUE and MSVU both proved stout defensively, each unravelling the other side’s forays into scoring areas. The Mystics may have the best chance to score in regulation time in the first half on a corner kick which appeared to line up for a header finish but the redirection went wide. The game ended scoreless as dusk gave way to darkness and the light standards took over. Under that setting, the teams chose five player each to take kicks and MSVU went first but Kate Burton’s effort sailed over the bar. Match 4 : Les Aigles d'Ahuntsic 5, Capilano Blues 0 Mathilde Gionet and Mégane Gagnon each scored a brace to lead les Aigles du Collège Ahuntsic to a 5-0 win over the Capilano University Blues under the lights in Squamish Wednesday in the final game of the day. The winning goal came off the foot of Clémence Dufort in the 11th minute. What looked to be a crossing service caused confusion for the Blues and ended up clearing the heads of all defenders and the keeper, landing in the back of the net. Gionet scored her first of the night shortly after, giving Ahuntsic a 2-0 lead at halftime. Ahuntsic displayed impressive pace throughout the match, carrying the ball with speed into enemy territory and backing up the Blues defenders. They used that to expand their advantage early in the second, with Gionet’s second followed by a goal in the run of play from Gagnon and then a penalty-kick goal from the second-year midfielder. 4imprint Players of the Game: Capilano: Maya Smith Ahuntsic: Mégane Gagnon
