2025 CCAA Curling Championships: Red Deer Queens and Kings Extend Unbeaten Streaks

Feb. 26, 2025 – Day two of 2025 CCAA Curling Canada Championships took place today at the Lethbridge Curling Club in Lethbridge, Alta. The women's rounds were held at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., while the men's rounds took place at 12:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Women's Championship The SAIT Trojans matched up against the Fanshawe Falcons in a close contest to start the day. SAIT gained momentum in the fourth with a two-point score and extended their lead with another two points in the sixth. However, Fanshawe fought back to tie things up with a three-point seventh end leading to a tie breaking ninth end where SAIT secured the 8-5 win with their final stone. The Humber Hawks got on the Board first against the Concordia Thunder, but CUE responded with a four-point second end and a three-point third. Humber managed single points in the middle ends but another three-point score for Concordia sealed the 10-4 win. The PACWEST struggled to generate offense against the Red Deer Queens, managing only a single point in the first end, followed by RDP scoring in every other round to finish the game 9-1. The Assiniboine Cougars consistently put up points against the Mohawk Mountaineers, including a number of steals, on route to an 8-3 victory. The Concordia Thunder took on the SAIT Trojans in the afternoon’s most exciting contest. SAIT started strong, scoring two points in each of the first two ends, but Concordia responded with a four-point third end to pull even. The game remained close through the middle ends, with both teams exchanging single points. Concordia pulled ahead with a two-point seventh end and secured the win with another two points in the eighth finishing the match 9-6. The PACWEST set the tone early with a five-point first end against the Assiniboine Cougars. Assiniboine got a few back but the PACWEST put the match out of reach in the seventh end to seal the 12-3 win. The Fanshawe Falcons and Humber Hawks traded single point early, but Fanshawe’s relentless scoring sealed the win after six ends with a final score of 13-1. The Red Deer Queens put together a similar dominant performance against the Mohawk Mountaineers, ending the game 10-1 after six ends. Men's Championship The SAIT Trojans started their day in a tight contest against the Humber Hawks. SAIT took an early lead with a three-point first end, but Humber kept the game tight with a key two-point fifth end and a three-point seventh end. SAIT maintained their composure and managed to hold off Humber’s comeback, securing a 7-6 win with a single point in the final frame. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings faced the Gaillards du Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue in another competitive match. Red Deer broke the game open with a four-point third end, but the Gaillards responded with single points in the fourth and sixth ends. The Kings maintained control, capping off their win with a three-point seventh end making the final score 8-3. The Mohawk Mountaineers traded single points with the Sault Cougars through the first several ends, before a two-point sixth end, secured the edge the Mountaineers needed to claim the 4-2 win. The NAIT Ooks opened the scoring against Assiniboine, but the Cougars answered with a one-point second end and a two-point fourth end to take the lead. NAIT surged back in the fifth end with a three-point score and maintained their momentum, eventually winning 7-3. In the last Draw of the day, the Sault Cougars battled the NAIT Ooks in a closely contested match. The teams traded single points through the first five ends and then each scored three in the sixth and seventh. All tied up heading into the final end, Sault secured a single point to seal a 6-5 victory. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings found themselves in another close contest as they faced their ACAC rivals the SAIT Trojans. It was a back-and-forth match with Red Deer gaining a narrow lead in the following two-points in the fifth. SAIT pulled back within one but the Kings kept control in the later ends, scoring again in the eighth to secure a 6-4 victory. The Gaillards du Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue took control early against the Humber Hawks, scoring two points in the second end and extending their lead with a three-point third end. Humber managed single points in the fourth and sixth ends, but the Gaillards added key points in the fifth and seventh to secure a 9-2 victory. The Mohawk Mountaineers early momentum carried them to a comfortable 11-2 victory over the Assiniboine Cougars. |
