Munro proudly served CCAA in various roles
Throughout the past seven seasons, David Munro has played a vital role behind the scenes for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The longtime Director of the Department of Athletics at the University of New Brunswick – Saint John (UNBSJ) will retire this month and step down from his role with the CCAA Executive after the 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
“Dave has always had the best-interests of the student-athlete in mind, and he has constantly and consistently demonstrated this through his work at UNBSJ, and his involvement with the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and the CCAA,” said Vince Amato, CCAA President. “One of his guiding principles has always been, ‘does this support our student-athletes?’ and during his years on the CCAA Executive, he never strayed from this core belief.”
Munro joined the CCAA Executive in 2015 and served for three seasons as the VP Sport Development. In true Munro form, when the CCAA required a Men’s Soccer Convenor in the fall of 2015, he immediately stepped up and filled a second role, which he performed for two years.
Then from 2018-22, Munro served the CCAA as VP Programs, another volunteer position – one that consists of a rather large portfolio.
His responsibilities have included monitoring all matters relating to the technical sport programs of the Association and supervising the selection process of all CCAA Championship bids. Other duties included liaising with national convenors on sport specific matters, serving as chair of the CCAA Championship hosting review committee and preparing technical motions for the AGM workbook.
Munro has also contributed with his involvement in the CCAA’s in-depth Sport Review, and he was the ACAA’s representative on the CCAA’s COVID-19 Task Force as the Association navigated through the pandemic.
“Dave always takes pride in wearing his ‘CCAA hat’, he has gone above and beyond for the Association over the years and his efforts have been greatly appreciated,” said Sandra Murray-MacDonell, Chief Executive Officer of the CCAA. “He has served as a tremendous ambassador for the CCAA, always demonstrating a positive attitude and enthusiasm in representing the Association.”
Munro was hired by UNBSJ in 1990 and has served in a variety of roles at the ACAA institution since then. He was officially appointed as Athletic Director in 2006.
According to June Lumsden, Director of Athletics & Recreation at Mount Saint Vincent University and a colleague of Munro’s in the ACAA, he is the kind of person everyone wants on their team.
“He is ethical, fair minded, hardworking, always willing to help, and exudes a positive outlook on life that is contagious,” she said.
Munro, who is an avid golfer, also has a great sense of humour and is committed to making things better, no matter the cause.
“David has been an outstanding representative for the ACAA and a dedicated CCAA Executive member,” said Lumsden, who also serves as a CCAA Director. “Our sincere thanks to David for his exemplary service and commitment to student-athletes across our country.”
