CCAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year

(Cornwall, Ont. – March 18, 2009)  Brad Karren from Lethbridge College is the winner of the 2009 CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award.

Under Brad’s guidance, the Kodiaks improved on their last years record (12-8), to(19 -1) regular season and exhibition record.  With a fairly young squad, Brad spent much time improving the team’s cohesion and chemistry diligently working on strong defensive play matched with a high octane offense.  Brad and the Kodiaks will be pressing for Gold at the CCAA Women’s Basketball Championships being held at Cégep Sainte-Foy in Québec.

Brad’s coaching objectives are clear; focus on building a solid program that is competitive, tough to play against and one that is a National contender each year. Balancing the athletics and academics is important as well and Coach Karren ensures his athletes progress academically and earn a college credential before their eligibility expires.  To assist in this process Brad cancels team practice and attends study hall each Monday evening so that the team fully understands the importance of their studies.

Off the court, Brad is always there for his team and as a way to stay connected over the summer he holds weekly scrimmage time for players.  Brad shares his knowledge as coach at the Kodiaks Summer Sport Camps and conducts special basketball clinics on the local First Nations Reserves.  Brad also organizes the largest Youth Club Basketball Tournaments in Alberta, called “The Kodiak Growl”.

Coach of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
