Mount Royal vs Vancouver Island

March 13, 2011 - The Mount Royal Cougars are the 2011 CCAA Women's Volleyball Champions. The Cougars came back from what looked like sure defeat to take the match in five grueling games (23-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24, 15-11). Then again, nothing was easy for the 3rd ranked Cougars who defeated # 6 Humber Hawks in their first game and then emerged with an 18-16 fifth set victory over # 2 FX Garneau in the semi-final.

Fourth ranked Vancouver Island had made their way to the final with a straight set win over 5th ranked Grande Prairie Regional College and then a more difficult five set win against provincial rival, defending champion and # 1 ranked UBC - Okanagan.

In the championship match, Vancouver Island University appeared poised to win the championship in four games when they had championship point leading 24-23. The head referee overturned the original call and indicated that the ball hit the net marker. The Cougars were given new life and took full advantage of it, defeating the Mariners 26-24 in the fourth set. Mount Royal was not to be denied and finished things off in the fifth and deciding set 15-11 to win the CCAA championship.

Andrea Price had an outstanding tournament for the Cougars and she was rewarded for her efforts by being selected as the Tournament Most Valuable Player.

The host Seawolves won their final match against the Mount Allison Mounties and were the recipients of the Fair Play Award
