March 10, 2011 – Steve Manuel is the 2011 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year. Manuel coaches the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in Kelowna, B.C.

The UBCO Heat is currently the top seed among eight teams who have qualified for the CCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships. Games take place Thursday March 10 to Saturday March 12 at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, N.B.

“Steve is a strong ambassador of the sport,” said Pierre Nobert, CCAA women’s volleyball convenor. “He’s heavily involved in the volleyball community, even outside UBCO.”

With a BCCAA league win/loss record of 132-38, it’s no surprise Manuel has been awarded the BCCAA Coach of the Year award five times in the past 10 years. His former players include two members of Team Canada who competed at the 2010 World Championship in Japan and two CCAA All-Canadians.  

Manuel’s goal is to develop his team to their full potential; as a result he has encouraged student-athletes to participate in camp clinics and events as coaches, officials, and event coordinators. His team currently carries a GPA of 73.3 per cent with no failed credits.

The other nominees for CCAA Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year include Dale Beausoleil of Cambrian College, Derrick Brooks of Mount Saint Vincent University, Julien Paquette of Collège Francois-Xavier-Garneau and Ron Thompson of Grande Prairie Regional College.

Manuel received the award Wednesday, March 9 during the CCAA All Canadian banquet at the CCAA Women's Volleyball Championship in Saint John, N.B. Coach of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
