Nipissing University set to host the CCAA Women’s Volleyball Nationals
(Cornwall, Ont. – February 12th, 2009) The 2009 CCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship should go down to the last minute as competition will be tough. With a list of very strong teams, this year’s CCAA champion will definitely deserve their title.
The tournament will be hosted in North Bay, Ontario by Nipissing University who have been busy organizing and preparing for the tournament. The provincial champions from each of the 5 provincial conferences, 2 wildcards and the host team will meet on March 12th when the tournament begins with the national champion being crowned March 14th.
“This season has shown that there is parity within the conferences with unprecedented shifts in top 5 team placings”, states Fred Batley, CCAA Women’s National Volleyball Convenor.
It has been a 3 team battle in the BC conference between Vancouver Island University, Capilano University, and UBC Okanagan, while in the Atlantic the historic powerhouse St Thomas Tommies have just suffered losses to Mount Allison University. In Ontario it has been Humber on top all season with Nipissing (host) and Mohawk to make a move as playoffs draw near. In the Alberta conference it has been Red Deer and Mount Royal vying for the top spot with MacEwan closing out the top 3 and in Quebec, F-X-Garneau has dominated all season with Lionel-Groulx and Bois-de-Boulogne hoping to dethrone them during provincials.
All conferences are now gearing up for play-offs and Conference Championships in the coming weeks, setting the stage for an exceptional National Championships.
Although Nipissing has not had the opportunity to host a National Championship, they are thrilled to have their chance this year when their very own Nipissing Lakers look to medal on home court.
“The organizing committee and host Athletic Director- Vito Castiglione will certainly put on a great event and the volleyball competition will be tough and exciting to watch” Fred Batley, CCAA Women’s National Volleyball Convenor.
