FX Garneau declared 2010 CCAA Women’s Soccer Champions

(Edmonton – November 13, 2010) This weekend's 2010 Big Kahuna Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Soccer National Championships came to an end on
Saturday, November 13, 2010 with the Francois-Xavier-Garneau Elans being declared CCAA Women's Soccer Champions with a 3-0 win over host team NAIT. The
tournament was held in Edmonton.
For much of the game, the teams seemed evenly matched. NAIT captain challenged Garneau goalkeeper Joelle Morasse in the early minutes with a looper that hit
the crossbar and bounced out of danger. In the second half, with the game still scoreless, NAIT striker Leanne Kadatz found the net from close range but was
ruled offside. The second half saw high-scoring Lea Chastenay Joseph land two goals to spark the FX Garneau Elans to a gold medal. Her first goal came at
about 60 minutes as an excellent through ball left her behind the defence for a shot that gave NAIT Ooks goalkeeper Tara Evans no chance for a save.
Esther Rochon accounted for the other goal. The discouraged Ooks never quit trying but the Elans gradually tightened their grip to earn a decisive victory.
Evans was handed a red card on the play for illegally preventing an obvious Garneau goal.  The closing goal came with about four minutes left.
FINAL STANDINGS
1. FX Garneau Elans GOLD
2. NAIT Ooks SILVER
3. Humber Hawks BRONZE
4. Concordia Thunder
5. Kwantlen Eagles
6. Holland Hurricanes
Th Humber Hawks earned their CCAA bronze medal over the Concordia Thunder 3-2 in a shootout. Brittany Szerbaker and Samantha Batten scored for the Hawks, who
enjoyed a clear margin in the first half. After their dull performance in the opening 45 minutes, the Thunder was clearly in charge for most of the second
half. Jordan Staples and Victoria Gull replied for Concordia to force a scoreless 30-minute overtime that led to the shootout.
This second loss in succession was especially disappointing for the Thunder, who entered as reigning national champions and went undefeated through all of
2009 and the full 2010 season before competing in these playoffs. Concordia bowed to FX Garneau on Friday while competing for a berth in the final.
The CCAA and the Host Organizing Committee would like to thank our national sponsors for their support
and efforts in making this Championship possible, including Big Kahuna Sports Co. – Title Sponsor and
Official Retailer of the CCAA.
