CCAA 2010 Women’s Soccer Player of the Year
(Edmonton – November 9, 2010) Alexa Kennedy has been named the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association’s 2010 Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. Kennedy is a striker for the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in Kelowna, B.C.
Kennedy has been an outstanding asset to her team this year; she scored 13 goals in 12 games, seven of which were game winners. “Alexa has developed a nose for goals,” explained coach Claire Paterson. “She is able to score when her team needs it most, making her a very dangerous player for the Heat.”
Kennedy is highly decorated in the BCCAA; for two years straight she’s been the league’s leading women’s scorer, a BCCAA First Team All-Star, and a BCCAA Athlete of the Week. She’s also twice been named to the CCAA Soccer All-Canadian team.
“Alexa works very hard in training to make herself and those around her better, said Paterson. “Her teammates look up to her and she leads by example. She has definitely been a key part of our program’s growth over the past two seasons.”
The UBC Okanagan Heat were undefeated this season. Kennedy has been playing with the team for three years, and also serves as a member of the Okanagan Whitecaps FC premiere division women’s soccer team in the Pacific Coast Soccer League.
The other nominees for Women’s Soccer Player of the Year were center midfielder Kelly Avalos of Algonquin College, striker Gillian Doubleday of Mount Royal University, center midfielder Marika McKenzie of University of King’s College, and center back Karen Sisti of Dawson College.
Kennedy received the award Tuesday, November 9 during the opening ceremonies banquet at the CCAA Big Kahuna Soccer National Championships in Edmonton. Player of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
