CCAA Confirms 2012 National Championship Wildcards
January 5, 2012 - Wildcard spots for the CCAA's 2012 badminton, basketball, volleyball national championships have been confirmed.
The CCAA’s basketball and volleyball national championship tournaments each consist of eight teams: five provincial champions, a second team from the host conference, and two wildcard spots.
The CCAA badminton national championship tournament consists of six teams: four provincial champions, a second team from the host conference, and a wildcard spot.
The wildcard spots are awarded to CCAA member conferences based on their performance at CCAA national championships over the past three years. Conferences awarded wildcard spots are eligible to send a second team to the CCAA national championships. No conference may fill more than two spots at a CCAA national championship, which excludes the host conference from being eligible for wildcards.
Quebec's RSEQ and Alberta’s ACAC conferences are each eligible for four wildcards, and Ontario's OCAA earned one wildcard.
The 2012 CCAA Badminton National Championship will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C on March 1-3, 2012. B.C’s PACWEST conference earned the wildcard but as hosts are ineligible to accept; therefore the ACAC will be entitled to send a second team.
The 2012 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship will be hosted by Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C. from March 8-10, 2012. Although PACWEST earned a wildcard the conference is hosting; therefore the ACAC and RSEQ conferences will be entitled to send their provincial silver medallists.
The 2012 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship will be hosted by Vancouver Island University March 8-10, 2012. Once again BC’s PACWEST conference earned a wildcard but as hosts are ineligible to accept; therefore the RSEQ and ACAC conferences will be eligible to send their provincial silver medallists.
The 2012 BMO CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship will be hosted by Lethbridge College March 15-17, 2012. Wildcard spots have been awarded to the RSEQ and OCAA.
The 2012 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship will be hosted by Nova Scotia Agricultural College March 15-17, 2012. Wildcard spots have been awarded to second-place teams from the ACAC and RSEQ. The RSEQ initially tied with PACWEST for the second spot but CCAA rules state in the event of a tie the wildcard is allotted to the conference that scored higher at the most recent national championship. The Vanier Cheetah’s gold finish at last year’s 2011 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships earned RSEQ the spot.
