Women's Basketball: Sizing up the Competition

WBB100November 25, 2011 - Recent statistics from the CCAA women's basketball season.

PACWEST
The CCAA national rankings for women's basketball seemed to grind to a halt last week, with only one new entry. That's good news for the VIU Mariners, who've been in second place for three weeks now. They currently have a perfect 4-0 record and teammate Jocelyn Jones is ranked fourth in the country for average points per game.

ACAC
The MacEwan Griffins's earned their number-two spot on the CCAA national rankings with a perfect 8-0 record in Alberta's North Division. The squad will competition in the ACAC from the Mount Royal Cougars, who are currently ranked 6th, and the Medicine Hat Rattlers, who are a new entry in 15th place.

OCAA
Ontario's athletes are among the country's best for baskets. Nakia Arthur of the Sheridan Bruins is currently leading, scoring an incredible 123 points in just 5 games. Rachelle Abella of the Mohawk Mountaineers is equally impressive, having scored 111 points in the same time period. However neither teams are currently nationally ranked, which exemplifies the OCAA's tough competition. Last year's silver medalists, the Algonquin Thunder, represent the OCAA's highest ranking in 7th place.

RSEQ
RSEQ is typically a strong contender in women's basketball; they finished with a gold and bronze medal at last year's 2011 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships. Although last year's champions, the Nomades de Montmorency, currently lag behind the Dynamiques de Sainte Foy and the Dawson Blues in the CCAA national rankings, all three are currently listed within the top five. The conference is also strong in rebounds, with RSEQ athletes Jessica Pellerin and Mariam Sylla nationally ranked at first and second respectively.

ACAA
After a fourth-place finish at last year's 2011 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships, the STU Tommies are back in the national spotlight with a 7-0 record and a top-10 national ranking. They bested the MSVU Mystics over the weekend to maintain their perfect record.
