Winning gold was the culmination of an extraordinary season for the Nomades. They dominated Quebec’s RSEQ league throughout the season with their undefeated record, and were consistently ranked among the CCAA’s top teams in the country. They won gold at the RSEQ provincial championships, and were seeded first among the eight teams attending the CCAA tournament. Before tournament play had even begun, head coach Guillaume Giroux was named 2011 CCAA Coach of the Year at the Belair Direct CCAA All-Canadian Awards Banquet in recognition of the team’s accomplishments.
The Nomades began the competition pitted against eighth-seed host team the Niagara College Knights. The Knights had home court advantage in their brand new athletics centre and played a strong second half, but were ultimately defeated 65-51.
The Nomades’ second game was versus the Capilano University Blues of North Vancouver, B.C. Capilano qualified for the national tournament after taking the BCCAA provincial championship by a single point, and were seeded fourth. Despite their first-round win over the undefeated ACAA champs St Thomas University Tommies of Fredericton, N.B., the Blues were beaten by the Nomades with a healthy margin of 78-48. With two straight wins under their belt, the Montmorency squad had earned a spot in the gold medal round against the Algonquin College Thunder.
The Thunder’s road to the gold medal game began when they defeated the Sheridan College Blues in the OCAA provincial finals. Seeded in sixth place at the CCAA championship, they kicked things off with an upset over the Dawson College Blues of Montreal, Que. The Blues had been seeded third after earning a silver medal at the RSEQ provincial championships, but lost their game to Algonquin 61-52.
The Thunder’s combined skills would cause yet another upset in their second-round game, defeating the number two seed Grand Prairie Regional College Wolves in an exciting match that concluded 57-45. Armed with Alberta’s ACAC championship title and 2011 CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Andria Carlyon, the Wolves had won their first game against the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, but would ultimately tie for a fifth-place finish in the tournament.
With Montmorency’s win, the school has claimed its sixth championship title, and its first since 2006. The Quebec RSEQ league maintains its stronghold over CCAA basketball; Cegep Sainte-Foy won three consecutive women’s titles in 2008-2010, and the Vanier College Cheetahs won the 2011 CCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Oshawa, Ont.
