CCAA Women's Basketball Athletes of the Month
The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association announced today the CCAA Women's Basketball Athletes of the Month for February.
The CCAA Athlete of the Month program recognizes student-athletes for their outstanding event performance and athletic accomplishments during that month. Awards are presented to one male and one female student-athlete in each conference participating in the CCAA Volleyball; the five conferences are Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA), Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF), Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA).
From British Columbia:
Student-Athlete Chelsea McMullen is in the Sport Management program at Camosun College. Playing wing/post, McMullen was a key component in the Chargers second place finish in the BCCAA, averaging 16.33 points per game; 294 total over 18 games played. Her outstanding play has garnered several awards; 2010 BCCAA Championship MVP; Three-time 2010 BCCAA Championship Player of the Game; BCCAA 1st Team All-Star
From Alberta:
Rookie guard, Kim Lee is enrolled in the Business Administration Program at SAIT Polytechnic. Lee was a key contributor to the Trojans first place finish in the ACAC South division. In February she tallied 136 points and logged 175 minutes of play. The Trojans finished the season with a 19-1 record, which is the best record in team history. Kim finished the season sitting atop the South Division leader board in nearly every major category. She led the South in points per game with 20.37; a field goal percentage of 52.6; and steals per game 4.00. She placed third in assists 4.05 per game.
From Ontario:
Fifth year point guard, Shannon Matheson, is a student-athlete at George Brown College in the Sport and Event Marketing Program. For the Huskies in the five games played in the month of February, Matheson contributed; 91 points; 37 rebounds; 19 assists; 31 steals. Overall Shannon currently sits in first in the OCAA in steals with 66; second in points per game with 17.46; and third in total points with 227.
From Quebec:
Mariam Sylla, is a first year student-athlete at Montmorency College. Playing Centre for the Nomades, Mariam, averages 25.2 minutes per game, while contributing 14.6; 11.6 rebounds; 1.3 blocks; and 1.2 interceptions per game. Mariam Sylla is a two-way player and a disciplined leader in practice and competition. Her work ethic and enthusiasm have spread throughout the team. She strives for perfection on the court and in the classroom.
From the Atlantic:
Katherine O’Brien is a fifth year student-athlete at Mount Saint Vincent University. As one of Mount Saint Vincent’s captains, Katherine provides excellent leadership for the Mystics both on the court vocally and with her play. Playing only 25 minutes per game O’Brien led her team in scoring with 16 points per game, and shooting 48% from the floor and 46% from the three point line. She has collected 4.5 rebounds; 4 assists; 3 steals per game and shot 77% from the free throw line. Her competitiveness is contagious which continues to make her teammates better.
