CCAA Athletes of the Month Have Been Named
CCAA Athletes of the Month Have Been Named
(Cornwall, Ont. – March 5, 2009) Each year at the end of February the CCAA honours men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes. These athletes are selected as the top athlete of their gender in their respective CCAA conferences.
The CCAA Basketball athletes of the month are as follows:
From British Columbia (BCCAA):
Virginia Watson
February was a solid month for Langara Falcons’ guard Virginia Watson as she averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Where Watson was at her best though was at 3-point range where she went 20-49 and sunk 6 in a single half. As the Falcons’ main ball handler, she is also given the task of defending the opposing team’s top offensive player game in and game out, regardless of their size or position. What coach Evans is most impressed with is her team first attitude and how she plays the game the way it was meant to be played. On February 13th, Virginia had her best statistical game of the year posting 25 points and 14 rebounds. She is also the only women’s player that ranks in the BCCAA top 10 in points, rebounds, and assists.
From Alberta (ACAC):
Kayla Lambert
Lambert led her Kodiaks to four straight victories to start the month of February, averaging 19.5 points per game while shooting 27 of 49 from the field, 8 of 17 from beyond the 3-point line, and 14 of 15 from the foul line. To add to those already impressive stats, Kayla showed that she is not just a one dimensional player, dishing out 21 assists, recording 19 rebounds, and 27 steals throughout the month of February. This season as a whole has been one to remember for Kayla as she is currently #1 in points per game and steals per game in the ACAC and is also #2 in shooting percentage and assists per game. Her Lethbridge Kodiaks have put together an impressive season and look to continue their winning ways as the season progresses with Kayla leading the way.
From Ontario (OCAA):
Rachel Niven
This fourth year point guard for the St. Lawrence Vikings is having her best season yet. Rachel is a dynamic point guard who uses her speed and intrinsic knowledge of the game to put up remarkable numbers, helping her Vikings to a 10-4 record so far this season. Averaging 23.5 points per game and putting up solid defensive numbers in steals and rebounds, Rachel has been a great example of what a leader should be on and off the court, putting forward a strong effort in all aspects of the game. Niven will need to continue her strong performance to push her team forward as they face off against a very strong Sheridan team at the OCAA provincial championship.
From Québec (FQSE):
Marie-Eve Martin
As captain of her Cheetahs Marie-Eve has been one of the main reasons for the success of the Vanier women’s basketball team so far this year. Martin does it all for the Cheetahs, whether it’s scoring, rebounding, playing tough inside, or coming up with big shots from beyond the arch. A quality that all great players have is consistency and consistent play is what Marie-Eve brings to the floor each and every game.
From the Atlantic (ACAA):
Alicia Sterling
Alicia has been a force on defence for the Tommies this season who are an impressive 21-1. Most players are recognized for their offensive abilities and although Alicia is a strong offensive player, she makes her mark on the defensive side of the court as she is given the responsibility of defending the opposing team’s best guards. Averaging 13.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game, Alicia will be frustrating offenses with her intensity on defence as STU moves forward in provincial championships.
