Springfield, MA-based Spalding is a leading producer and marketer of basketballs, footballs, volleyballs and soccer balls under the Spalding brand name and softballs under the Dudley brand. Spalding is the official basketball supplier of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the official volleyball of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and American Volleyball Association (AVA), the official soccer ball of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and the official football of the American Football League (AFL) and Pop Warner. Spalding was acquired by Russell Corporation in May 2003.

As part of Russell Corporation, Spalding was combined with recent acquisitions American Athletic, Inc. and Huffy Sports in 2004, to create the Spalding Group. AAI is the leading seller of gymnastics equipment in the country as well as institutional basketball backboards, and Huffy Sports, is a leader in basketball backboard systems.Today, with a reported $400 million in worldwide trademark sales, the Spalding Group represents the largest basketball equipment supplier in the world. In December of 2004, it signed an eight-year exclusive equipment contract with the NBA. Internationally, Spalding is affiliated with professional leagues in 53 countries, including a new long-term China League Agreement. According to Creelman, Spalding plans to grow its business in football, soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball with the initial product focus on balls and the channel focus on institutional and competitive play.

Spalding was the first to create a ball specifically for the game of basketball well over 100 years ago. Since 1983, Spalding has been the official basketball of the NBA since 1983. This basketball is made of premium grade leather shell with an average count of 122 pebbles per square inch for exceptional ball handling.
