Al's name is synonymous with St. Clair College; he was its first men's basketball coach from 1967-1980, compiling an Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) record of 175 wins against 54 losses while winning three division titles. Al was the first Athletic Director of St. Clair College and oversaw its varsity teams expand from 6 to 14 sports.  Basketball Convenor of the OCAA, 1967-69, and of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1973-78.  He was President of the OCAA from 1969-71, and was a founding director of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association and became the CCAA's second President in 1979-1981.  As CCAA President Al was instrumental in the development of criteria enabling the Association to hire its first full-time Executive Director.  In the CCAA's formative years Al worked diligently in researching and defending funding proposals to Sport Canada that allowed CCAA National Championships to expand from 2 events to 6 under his leadership. In 2004 during the CCAA's 30th anniversary celebrations Al was asked about his fondest CCAA memory, he indicated that it was "the camaraderie, friendship, support and loyalty of colleagues in undertaking a national project of this magnitude."

Judy Smith, CCAA President remembers working with Al during his presidency. “The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association has lost one of its most passionate and insightful pioneers. Hoff is remembered fondly by everyone who worked with him in the early days of the Association.  His leadership is remembered as being team oriented and tireless. He believed in college student-athletes across the country and worked relentlessly to provide them with the opportunity to showcase their talents at a National Level. Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Family."
