Highlights from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association AGM

BlueMountJune 20, 2011 - The 2011 CCAA annual general meeting just wrapped up at beautiful Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, Ont.

 

 

 

The CCAA annual general meeting brings all five of the CCAA member conferences together to evaluate CCAA operations and future direction. Special thanks to the OCAA for organizing the five-day event.

New Name for the CCAA
The CCAA has changed its name from the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association to Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. The name better reflects the CCAA’s members, which includes cégeps, colleges, universities, university colleges and technical institutes.

Strategic Plan
The CCAA is in its final year of its 2009-2011 Strategic Plan. A new three-year plan for 2012-15 will be developed by committee and presented for approval at the 2012 AGM.

Elections
There are several new faces serving the CCAA. Leigh Goldie of Grande Prairie Regional College was elected to the CCAA executive as vice president of programs, James Loughlin of Medicine Hat College was elected men’s soccer convenor and Ray Sarkis was elected men’s volleyball convenor.

Invitational Championships
The CCAA has established criteria for future CCAA invitational championships. A 2012 curling invitational championship is currently being reviewed. 

Championship Hosts
Champlain College – St. Lambert of St. Lambert, Que. has been confirmed as host of the 2012 CCAA Cross-Country Running Open Championship.
Douglas College of New Westminster, B.C. has been confirmed as host of the 2012 CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championships.
Holland College of Charlottetown, P.E.I. has been confirmed as host of the 2012 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championships.

Coaching Survey Results
The CCAA recently compiled results from the CCAA Coach Survey. Please contact the office for a copy of the summary report.

Awards and Recognition
Wade Kolmel of Keyano College was named the
2011 CCAA Athletic Director of the Year.
The University of Northern British Columbia received the
2011 CCAA Community Service Award.
Fanshawe College won the CCAA
Marketing Incentive Program Elite Award, Keyano College won the CCAA Marketing Incentive Program Gold Award, and several sweepstake prizes were distributed. There was also a draw for a return trip for two to any WestJet destination in Canada; the winner was Capilano University. 
Mary Winkenweder, CCAA finance and administration coordinator, was recognized for her 10 years of service with the national office.
