A New Look for the CCAA!

(Cornwall, Ontario – June 18, 2010)  Over 50 delegates and guests from across Canada met in scenic Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the 2010 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Annual General Meeting. It was fitting that the CCAA was in the birthplace of Canada with the dawn of the new CCAA logo.  The new sleek and clean trademark for the CCAA was met with favoured review during its unveiling. 

The CCAA would like to thank the Atlantic Colleges' Athletic Association (ACAA) and Host institution, Holland College for their wonderful hospitality.   The meetings were held at the Tourism and Culinary Centre and needless to say those in attendance were treated to a continual assortment of tasty, tantalizing culinary delights, from treats to fully course meals.

In addition to the regular plenary, delegates took part in a number of value-added sessions including: team-building activities; sponsored lunches hosted by Big Kahuna "Official retailer of the CCAA" and West Jet "Preferred Airline Carrier of the CCAA"; Hot Stove discussions that provided valuable insight and information into key topics areas; social media, technology; new CCAA sports and the impact of colleges becoming universities. During the Annual Awards banquet hosted at the Culinary Institute of Canada; Fanshawe College's Athletic Director, Michael Lindsay, received the 2010 CCAA Athletic Director of the Year Award, Durham College received the  2010 CCAA Community Service Award, Douglas College was presented with the MIP Elite Award for having the greatest total purchases of CCAA endorsed products, while Humber College won the MIP Gold Award. Highlights from the 2010 CCAA Annual General Meeting include:

  • The CIS-CCAA Feasibility Study Final Report was received and a phase in approach to Ad-Hoc Partnering with the CIS was approved by the membership.
  • Clarification was made around current academic eligibility rules.  The transfer rule was approved to come into affect September 2011 and the student-athlete financial awards motion was defeated.
  • 2010-11 marks the sixth year of the Female Apprentice Coach Program.  Information from the 2009-10 final reports was used to assist the project committee in evaluating and refining the program.  The feedback from members over the ongoing funding of the program will be sourced through the 2010 Fall Workbook.
  • The CCAA Constitutional committee was tasked to investigate and survey stakeholders on the Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) name.     
  • New Hosting Grid was approved commencing Fall 2011.  Both golf and Cross Country Running are now included on the host grid and men's and women's' soccer championships have been split between two conference.
  • A new level of CCAA Championship - the CCAA National Championship (Invitational) was approved in the hopes of kick starting new CCAA sports and providing greater opportunity to student-athletes.
  • A new wildcard process was approved which will predetermine CCAA wildcards based on past three years performance in the sports of volleyball and basketball.    
  • A new golf handicap eligibility requirement for CCAA Championships has been approved to ensure high calibre competition. 
  • In soccer the maximum number of players permitted on the official tournament roster is 20 and now a maximum of 18 players are eligible to play in each National Championship game
  • The concept of a 8-team format for soccer was approved to begin in 2012.  The specific format and fill process will be developed for fall workbook. 
  • Implementation process for new FIBA Rules was presented for decision at Winter Board Meeting.  Details will be provided in the minutes and through National Office communiqué. 
  • The adidas World Cup Match Ball - Jabulani is the CCAA Official Soccer Game ball and adidas Tango Pasadena is the Official practise ball for 2010-11.
  • The Marketing Incentive Program (MIP) in 2009-10 had a record breaking $1,372,110 in purchases. 
  • A number of branding initiatives were approved including, members banner, new Championship trophies, new Championship website template, webcasting minimum standards, on-line CCAA Directory.
  • Equity fund policy was approved to manage and provide direction for accumulated surplus.
  • The opportunity to participate in a CCAA Professional Development conference in conjunction with the CCAA's AGM in 2011 will be presented to the membership in the fall.
  • 2011 Winter Board Meeting will take place in Ottawa from January 11-13, 2011 in Ottawa.
  • 2011 Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) starting June 12th
  • New Members include:  Collège Maisonneuve (FQSE) as an affiliate member in Cross Country running, Canadore College (OCAA) as a full member in volleyball and Collège Shawinigan (FQSE) as an affiliate member in Cross country running.
