2009 CCAA Annual General Meeting in review
(Cornwall, Ontario – June 15, 2009) Over 40 delegates from across Canada met in Edmonton, Alberta, for the 2009 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Annual General Meeting. The CCAA would like to thank the Alberta Colleges' Athletic Conference (ACAC) for their wonderful hospitality.
In addition to the regular plenary sessions, which finished ahead of schedule, delegates were treated to a number of value-added sessions including: a team-building afternoon that had members participating in a number of mentally and social interactive activities; a lunch hosted by Big Kahuna Sport Company's Craig Preece who previewed the new adidas product; a presentation by SportsCanada.tv’s Choyal Brown, who provided insight on how to produce easy, quality Web TV broadcasts at an inexpensive price; an awards banquet hosted at historic Fort Edmonton at which time Capilano University’s Athletic Director, Joe Iacobellis , received the 2009 CCAA Athletic Director of the Year Award, Thompson Rivers University received the 2009 CCAA Community Service Award, Larry Reid, from TRU was on hand to receive the honour, UBC – Okanagan was presented with the MIP Elite Award for having the greatest total purchases of CCAA endorsed products, while Fanshawe College won the MIP Gold Award. Highlights from the 2009CCAA Annual General Meeting include:
- Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) applying to the CCAA in fall 2009.
- Guiding principles are massaged and 2009-12 Strategic Plan is approved.
- Clarification is made around current academic eligibility rules and new rules in relation to transferring and student-athlete financial awards are introduced for discussion.
- Fall 2010 bids are received and approved including: Thompson River’s University for golf, St. Thomas University for cross country running and NAIT for men and women’s soccer.
- The Female Apprentice Coach Program continues into its fifth year on existence. Results of the comprehensive apprentice coach survey conducted in April were presented to the Board and circulated to the membership. Information from the survey will be used to assist the project committee in evaluating and refining the program.
- New CCAA logo concepts were presented to the board for feedback. The preferred concept will be refined for approval at the Winter Board Meeting.
- Webcasting for CCAA Championships becoming a reality.
- New sport fees for 2009-10 and 2010-11 were approved.
- Academic All-Canadian athletic criteria for golf and cross-country running are clarified for award recognition.
- One new member added to the Executive committee. Ray Sarkis from Niagara College was acclaimed as Vice President Programs. Diana Drury was recognized both by the National Convenors and the Board for her long-standing service as Vice President Programs.
- The 2010 Winter Board Meeting will take place in Ottawa from January 12-14.
- The 2010 Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) in conjunction with Holland College in Charlottetown PEI starting June 6th.
New Members include: Cégep de Saint-Félicien (QSSF) accepted as an affiliate member, Cégep de Baie-Comeau (QSSF) accepted as an affiliate member and Collège Nouvelles-Frontières (QSSF) accepted as a full member.
