July 23 2012 - Greg Ryan, athletic director at the University of Alberta - Augustana in Camrose, Alta. has been named Team Canada's technical manager for the 2013 FISU Summer Universiade.
This is Ryan's fifth trip to FISU's World Student Games, which will take place in Kazan, Russia in July 2013 and Trentino, Italy in December 2013. In each of his preceeding four trips Ryan has served as a volleyball coach, leading the men's team to a seventh-place finish in 2003.
"This will be a unique opportunity for me to experience the Games from the organizational side" said Greg, "I am looking forward to a great learning opportunity about event management."
"We are thrilled with the staff we have assembled for the 2013 Universiades," said Mary MacDonald, assistant chef de mission. "Thanks to their support and expertise, we are confident that Canadian student-athletes will achieve great success and enjoy a memorable experience."
Canada is expected to send its largest delegation ever to both the Summer and Winter Universiades in 2013. Announcements for athlete rosters and coaching staff will follow.
In 2011, Canada sent a delegation of 141 - including 102 athletes - to the winter Games in Turkey, and a contingent of 349 - including 246 athletes - to the summer Games in China. Canadian student-athletes captured five medals in Turkey (one gold, three silver, one bronze) and reached the podium eight times in China (0-5-3).
