VIU declared 2010 CCAA Men’s Soccer Champions
(Edmonton – November 13, 2010) The 2010 Big Kahuna Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Soccer National Championships came to an end on Saturday
November 13, 2010 at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. The Vancouver Island Mariners prevailed in a shootout to win the CCAA men's soccer
championships.
The game was tied with no scores at halftime. NAIT took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute, constructed on a low 25-yard left-footer by CCAA All-Canadian Thiago
Silva. Soon after the British Columbia representatives were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. A high, wicked drive got past Black’s upraised
arm but hit the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, Mariners Brad Crew fired a low shot that gave Ooks goalkeeper Brendan Black no chance. The game tied
mere moments before officials' time ran out. The incredible effort of both teams led to 30 minutes of overtime and almost 10 free kicks before Chris Arnett
made the decisive kick and goaltender Robbie Coltrane made a great save to guarantee the gold medal.
The VIU Mariners defeated the NAIT Ooks 4-3 in free kicks.
FINAL STANDINGS
1. VIU Mariners GOLD
2. NAIT Ooks SILVER
3. Humber Hawks BRONZE
4. Concordia Thunder
5. Dawson Blues
6. UNBSJ Seawolves
The bronze medal game between Humber and Concordia ended 2-0 in favour of the Humber Hawks. A goal by Aleks Janjic at about 20 minutes of the first half was
enough to give the Ontario team a bronze medal in the men’s Canadian college soccer final. Forward Nick Miodrag extended the Humber margin by scoring as time
ran out at the end of the first half.
Despite several good opportunities for Concordia before the halftime intermission and in the early moments after the break when a goal might have put the
Thunder back into contention, Humber kept its defensive poise in support of goaltender David Ragno, who was full measure for the shutout. Adam Giebelhaus, a
standout in goal for Concordia throughout the tournament, did not complete the second half.
The CCAA and the Host Organizing Committee would like to thank our national sponsors for their support and efforts in making this Championship possible,
including Big Kahuna Sports – Title Sponsor and Official Retailer of the CCAA.
