Men's Basketball: Sizing up the Competition

PACWEST
B.C.'s VIU Mariners emerged from last year's 2011 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championships with a bronze, and are contenders to do so again this year. The squad currently sits in ninth place in the CCAA national rankings, while the Capilano Blues are ranked third. Star players competing in the conference include Kwantlen Eagles' AJ Adusei, leading the CCAA's points stats with an average of 36 points per game, and Capilano's Omid Pourmomen, currently ranked third in the nation for rebounds.

ACAC
Alberta's Lakeland Rustlers made a big debut on the national stage, having claimed the top spot in the rankings throughout first semester. Their perfect record may have something to do with Njuguna Waiganjo, who's earned an average of 25 points per game. Their strongest competition in the ACAC will likely come from the NAIT Ooks, a rival North Division squad, or the Mount Royal Cougars, who compete in the South division and are currently ranked in 11th place.

OCAA
Of the six Ontario teams named in the CCAA national rankings, the Humber Hawks are the highest on the list in sixth place. The conference also boasts three top scorers and four of the country's best rebounders, including record holder Dele Oworu. The Algoma Thunderbirds' forward has an average of 14 rebounds per game.

RSEQ
The Vanier Cheetahs, last year's 2011 CCAA National Champions, are leading the Quebec league with a perfect record and a number-two spot in the CCAA national rankings. The league's also armed with the Champlain St. Lambert Cavaliers (#8) and two top rebounders.

ACAA
The MSVU Mystics are top of the ACAA conference and ranked fourth overall, mirroring their fourth-place finish at last year's 2011 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championships. They're the only ACAA squad in the CCAA national rankings, but JD Howlett of the UKC Blue Devils could be considered the league's star player; he's ranked second in Canada for rebounds, sixth for points!
