March 20, 2011 - The Vanier College Cheetahs of Ville de St. Laurent, Que. will come home with gold from the CCAA Men's Basketball Championship in Oshawa, Ont.

The Cheetahs won the gold medal game 102 - 85 over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks of Lethbridge, Alta. The gold medal game took place Saturday, March 19 at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont.

The Vanier Cheetahs qualified for the CCAA tournament after besting the Cegep de Sainte-Foy Dynamiques in the RSEQ provincial championship. But they had their work cut out for them when they were seeded in seventh place, pitting them against the second-seed NAIT Ooks of Edmonton, Alta.  in the first round. It was a close game throughout, reflected in a final score of 75-73 in favour of the Cheetahs.

The Cheetah’s second round opponent was the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics of Halifax, N.S. The ACAA champions were seeded in sixth and riding high from their first-round upset over the Humber College Hawks. Now playing in the semi-final, one of these teams would soon qualify for the gold medal game. In yet another close call, Vanier eliminated MSVU with a score of 70-65. They would now face the fifth-seed Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the final.

The Kodiaks entered the championship as a wildcard, after a silver finish at the ACAC provincial championship. Theirs was an uphill battle to the gold-medal game; their first opponent was the UNBC Northern Timberwolves of Prince George, B.C. UNBC not only came armed with Inderbir Gill (2010 Male Athlete of the Year Across All CCAA Sports and 2011 CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year) but were defending champions; the squad had earned their first ever championship title in 2010. Despite the odds, Lethbridge bested them 81-66.

That put them in the semi-final game against the first-seed Vancouver Island University Mariners on Friday night. VIU finished the CCAA regular season ranked first in the country, and had won gold at the BCCAA provincial championships. But the Kodiaks pulled through 82-73 and advanced to the gold medal game. VIU finished with bronze.

The Quebec RSEQ league maintains its stronghold over CCAA basketball; the College Montmorency Nomades won the 2011 CCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in Welland, Ont. For more details on the CCAA Women’s Basketball Championships, visit the championship website
