Trevor Costello named 2011 CCAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year

March 17, 2011- Trevor Costello is the 2011 CCAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Costello is head coach of the Algonquin College Thunder in Ottawa, Ontario.
“Algonquin has an excellent record in a tough league,” said Jeff Harris, CCAA men’s basketball convenor. “Trevor Costello has given the team depth and longevity.”
Members of the Costello’s squad include 2011 CCAA All-Canadian Niuguna Waiganjo and players who earlier this month were named the OCAA East Division’s Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and members of the All-Star and All-Rookie teams. His coaching has helped his athletes achieve athletic excellence as well as pushing them to success in academics.
In addition to coaching the varsity team, Costello coordinates the Thunder Basketball Summer Camp, Spring League and coaches basketball at the elementary level.
Costello and the Thunder improved this season with a 19-1 record and were nationally ranked in third place at the end of the regular season.
The other nominees for the coach of the year were Tony Bryce of Vancouver Island University, Mike Hansen of Lethbridge College, Rick Plato of Mount Saint Vincent University and Wayne Yearwood of Dawson College.
Trevor Costello received the award Wednesday, March 16 at the Belair Direct CCAA All Canadian Banquet at the CCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Oshawa, Ontario. Coach of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
