CCAA Athletes of the Month Have Been Named
(Cornwall, Ont. – March 5, 2009) Each year at the end of February the CCAA honours men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes. These athletes are selected as the top athlete of their gender in their respective CCAA conferences.
The CCAA Basketball athletes of the month are as follows:
From British Columbia (BCCAA):
Philbert States
States had an impressive February in his first year of competition in the BCCAA leading all scorers with 23 points per game and 12 rebounds per game. Acting as team captain, Philbert shot over 54% from the field, was #7 in assists in the conference, and made everyone around him better as his Royals went 6-3 while he was in the line-up compared to a 0-3 record when he was not. Averaging 37 minutes per game, Philbert States proved to be an invaluable part of his team and garnered the Athlete of the Month award as the BCCAA’s top men’s basketball player.
From Alberta (ACAC):
Ossie Hinds
A veteran to the ACAC, Ossie Hinds averaged a double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals per game, leading his Rustlers to 4 conference wins in the month of February. In his fifth year as a Rustler, Hinds ranks third all-time in ACAC scoring and is Lakeland College’s leader in points, assists, rebounds, and games played. Not only is Ossie an outstanding basketball player, he is a leader off the court as well, spending his free time volunteering in the ‘Rustlers Reading Program’ and acts as Recreation Assistant on campus.
From Ontario (OCAA):
Jovain Wilson-Cutting
In his second year at Fleming, Jovain has put up very impressive numbers and has been one of the main reasons for the Knights’ high scoring wins over the past two months. Not only is he an offensive catalyst, coach Bill Crowdis counts on Jovain to be a force on defence as well. With an average of 21.67 points per game and solid defensive play, Jovain has earned player of the month award for the OCAA.
From Québec (FQSE):
Vincent Lanctôt-Fortier
Averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds per game, Vincent prides himself on being a complete player. His Nomades count on him to be a defensive presence which he has been throughout the course of not only this month but the whole season. In a tough double-overtime victory this past month, Vincent put up a double-double with 18 points and a solid 13 rebounds. Averaging close to 10 rebounds per game, Lanctôt-Fortier has been dominant in the paint and has been a main contributor to the Nomades recent climb in the CCAA men’s basketball rankings.
From the Atlantic (ACAA):
Jason Carlson
During the month of February, Jason led his MSVU Mystics to a perfect 3-0 record. In consecutive road wins at STU, Jason averaged a double-double and was named player of the game in both victories. In a big home win over MTA, Carlson had another double-double as he scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds in the 28 point victory. As one of MSVU’s tri-captains, Jason has provided excellent leadership in MSVU’s current #1 national ranking. He provides excellent leadership both on and off the court and has been a mark of consistency throughout the entire season.
