CCAA Wraps Up the 2010 PING CCAA Golf Championship

Golf2010_100(Kamloops, BC – October 18,2010) – The Canadian Colleges Athletics Association has completed another golf season at the 2010 PING CCAA Golf Championships in Kamloops, B.C. Student athletes survived three rounds amid unstable winds to complete in the national championship tournament.

Humber College earned first place in the men’s team competition, with team member David Lang also taking home gold in the men’s individual competition. Josee Doyon of College Champlain St-Lawrence earned first prize in the women’s individual race, and Durham College won gold for the women’s team.

Ontario’s Humber Hawks dominated the men’s division; they led from start to finish in the team competition and had four golfers in the top five individually.

“It was probably the best golf I’ve seen in ten years,’ said a very happy Hawks coach Ray Chateau, who has run the program for a decade. “ Our top four players really meshed as a group.” Chateau explained team members Dave Lang, Mark Hoffman, Adrian Cord and Greg Belisto are “four good friends who leaned on each other and played great golf.”

The Humber team’s three-round total was 848. University of the Fraser Valley Cascades from BC were second at 886 followed by the Georgian College Grizzlies of Ontario at 896.

Lang won the men’s individual event with 10 under par at 206. The 23-year-old from Toronto, Ontario couldn’t wipe the smile off his face after signing his scorecard and being declared the champion.

“It feels great, I really can’t put it into words,” he beamed.  He felt he got off to rocky start in round three with his irons but his putter kept him in it. “I started to hit some good shots and kept putting well the whole day.” Lang admitted going into the tournament that his goal was to come in the top five and help his team win the title.

Teammates Mark Hoffman and Adrian Cord came second and third. Both shot 67s on the final day to wind up at 212 and 213 respectively. Chad Currie of Niagara College finished fourth at 216, one shot better than Humber’s Greg Belisto.

On the women’s side, 17-year-old Josee Doyon of Champlain St. Lawrence of Quebec set the pace from wire to wire. She carded three straight 74 scores to finish at 222.

“I shot the same score each day, but each day had its different challenges,” said Doyon. “Today, I started with two birdies in a row and finished well. But I had some tough holes in between.” Doyon was extremely happy with her short game during the week. She too is pleased to be a national champion in her first year of college golf. Her future plans are to eventually turn pro.

Tiffany Albath of Durham College placed second at 233, with teammate Kayleigh Kraemer third at 235. Jennifer Woods of UBCO finished fourth, and Alana Kent of University of British Columbia Okanogan came fifth.
