2009 PING CCAA Golf Championships Come to an End

golfchamps2009wlogo(Cornwall, ON) – The 2009 PING Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championships come to an end as golfers survived three rounds of golf during harsh, unseasonal weather, in Windsor, Ontario.

The week drew to a close with two outstanding finishes; Cégep Champlain St. Lawrence, Humber College take Team gold; Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Chris Hargest win Individual Titles during the 2009 PING CCAA Golf Championships hosted by St. Clair College October 12-16.

On the women’s side of the course, Cégep Champlain St. Lawrence dominated the course as they took home the Gold Medal in the team competition with a commanding 33-shot lead above the second place team finish.  Teammates Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Elyse Archambault finished the week off with a low score of +22 respectively (153-149-145 – 447).

Anne-Catherine Tanguay from Cégep Champlain St. Lawrence did not come up short as she proved herself as the women’s leader throughout the entire competition.  Tanguay finished the championships with a commanding nine-shot lead from the second place finish.  Tanguay set herself apart from the pack as she faced the cold weather and finished as the Women’s Individual Champion.

“I hit the ball very well today but I could not putt well.  I hit a lot of shots very close but struggled to make my birdie putts” says Tanguay at the closing ceremonies.  “It was great to win both the Individual and Team gold medals.  It was an amazing tournament and I am very happy with how my teammate and I played”.

In men’s individual action the competition was close as they took to the course.  The leader board was constantly changing throughout the three rounds of golf this past week, but ended in a hard fought finish for Chris Hargest from Niagara College.  Hargest was amongst the top golfers during the competition leaving no prisoners as he climbed into the top spot on the leader board with a Par finish (73-70-70 – 213).

Humber College’s Men’s team efforts prevailed when they ended the competition with a six-shot lead to the second place team finish.

“It was a grind and a very satisfying team win” says teammate Mike Zizek from Humber College.  “We were behind after day one but fought our way back.  I can only think of one word to discuss the tournament and the golf course; awesome!”

Zizek’s teammate Ryan Willoughby who placed second overall also had a comment at the closing ceremonies, “Our team is very tight and I think that helped us come back.  It was probably our toughest win since I have been here but it feels great to come back and win”.

“This tournament was by far the best National Championships I have taken part in.  The little things that were part of the tournament made a huge difference; having our own locker for the week and having starters on each tee announce your name and college” adds Willoughby.
