Drew Carver Named 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running Coach of the Year
November 12, 2011 - (Kamloops) - The CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) has selected Drew Carver the 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running Coach of the Year.
Carver coaches the men and women’s teams at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alta.
“Drew Carver stood out based on the progress of his program and the strength of his athletes,” says June Lumsden, executive member of the CCAA. “The team’s national rankings have been impressive.”
Carver began coaching the MacEwan Griffins in 2009, and since then the team has shown continual improvement. Whereas the men’s team had previously been omitted from the CCAA nationally rankings, they reached fifth place during the 2011 season, and the women’s team held the top spot.
The teams’ rankings were due to their impressive race results; the MacEwan Griffins women’s team placed first at each of the five ACAC non-conference races, and won silver at the ACAC championship. The men placed either first or second at the ACAC non-conference races and took home gold at ACAC championship. Three members of the squad represented the ACAC All-Conference Team at the 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships, many for the second time.
Carver’s goal is to establish a running culture at MacEwan and improve his athletes’ training habits, attitudes and self-esteem. He also supports academics, resulting in CCAA Scholar Athlete and SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian awards for his runners.
He holds Level 2 National Coaching Certification in distance running, high jump, hurdles and sprints.
The other nominees were Éric Beaudoin of the Champlain College - St.Lambert Cavaliers, Joy Galloway-Jones of the NSAC Rams and Monique Haan of the Humber College Hawks.
Drew Carver received the 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running Coach of the Year award Saturday, November 12 at the 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships in Kamloops, B.C. Coach of the Year winners receive a customized CCAA ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
