Preview: 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championship
October 11, 2011 - The 2011 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championship will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C.
Men and women’s races will take place November 12, 2011 at McArthur Island Park.
“The Thompson Rivers athletics department has developed a solid track record for hosting events” said Bruce Hunter, president of the BCCAA. “They will no doubt do a super job hosting the cross-country nationals.”
The CCAA championship event is in keeping with the city’s reputation as ‘Canada’s tournament capital,’ as Kamloops regularly hosts high-profile sport competitions. In 2010, McArthur Island Park was the site of the World Masters Championships’ cross-country race, with the course marshall serving as chief marshall for the CCAA event.
The CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championship is an open championship, with athletes from all CCAA member institutions invited to participate. It is the CCAA’s most well-attended sporting event, with over 200 runners expected to compete in the 5k women’s race and 8k men’s race. Runners may compete either as individuals or as members of an institution and/or regional member conference team, with medals handed out in all three categories.
Each CCAA regional member conference may send one male and one female team, and in addition each member institution may send one male and one female team. Conference teams consist of 5-7 starters; the placing of the first five shall be totalled to determine the team score. Institution teams consist of 4-6 starters, and the placing of the first four athletes shall be totalled to determine the team score. Individuals may be on both their conference team and their institution’s team.
With last year’s individual gold medalists Willy Kimosop and Fiona Benson both moving on from their studies, two new elite athletes will be rewarded in November.
