NAIT Ooks Continue to Dominate ACAC Badminton
January 25, 2012 – The latest ACAC badminton tournament followed a now-familiar pattern; the NAIT Ooks took first place in four of the five events.
The NAIT Ooks sit at first place in the ACAC badminton rankings having earned top points in all three ACAC tournaments thus far this season. They're followed by the Concordia Thunder, Red Deer Kings and Queens, and the Mount Royal Cougars.
The NAIT Ooks' Kai Dan took first place in the men's singles event this weekend, increasing his odds of earning a national title for the second consecutive year.
The women's singles title went to Concordia Thunder's Grace Box, now competing in her fifth and final year. Box took home a national bronze for women's doubles in 2011.
The men's, women's and mixed doubles events were a clean sweep for NAIT; Jonathan Chang and Jason Chou were partnered in the men's, while Jessica Yu pulled double-duty and partnered with Sinead Cheah for women's and Kai Dan for mixed.
Although NAIT's enjoyed success with their current roster, their squad's existing partnerships will have to be modified if they qualify for the 2012 CCAA Badminton National Championship. The CCAA's badminton rules state that no player is allowed to compete in more than one event at nationals, which may result in some difficult decisions for Jessica Yu and Kai Dan.
The 2012 CCAA Badminton National Championship will be hosted by TRU in Kamloops, B.C March 1-3, 2012.
