British Columbia's BCCAA league dominated throughout the tournament, with BCCAA athletes taking home gold in four of the five events. They also won the Team Supremacy Award, presented to the conference that won that most matches over the week during the round robin play between six teams from across Canada (two BC teams, two Alberta teams, one Ontario squad, and a team from Atlantic Canada.)
The British Columbia team after five rounds of play finished with a 21-4 record, ahead of Alberta (ACAC) who won 17 matches and lost eight. The Ontario team (OCAA) was 15-10, while the BC Wild Card team was next with a 13-12 record. The Alberta Wild Card entry and Team Atlantic finished fifth (9-16) and sixth (0-25) respectively.
Team Atlantic was the winner of the prestigious Eileen Harle Fair Play Award. Mount Allison’s mixed doubles duo of Heather Murray (Belleisle, NS) and Justin Barkhouse (Hantsport, NS) won that honour. Though they were defeated 2-1, they played one of the most exciting matches of the tournament against Team Ontario.
Also the men’s doubles twosome of Mount A’s Eric Freeman and Bryan Downey put up a feisty fight against the ACAC Wild Card team for fifth place. Tied at one game each, the team was up 13-11 in the third when Downey injured his shoulder. Despite the injury he determinedly continued, but the team eventually lost the tiebreaker 21-18 in an exciting finish.
Team Atlantic’s athletic Ryan MacIntosh won fifth-place with his 2-0 victory over ACAC Wild Card opponent Jie Sim (21-18, 21-18), and Mounties’ Lori McKnight fought hard against her BCCAA (#2) opponent in women’s singles but lost the tiebreaker game 21-16. Team Atlantic’s women’s squad of Rachel Nelems and Steph Burt finished sixth when they were defeated by BC’s Wild Card team with a 2-0 score.
The BCCAA champion squad was ranked first overall in the tournament; RuiLin Huang earned gold in the women's singles event and Stephanie Ko and Melody Liang earned gold in women's doubles. BCCAA's wildcard team also did well, with Darren Hong and Wei Luo earning gold in the men's doubles event, and duo Ashley Jang and Jensen Ly taking gold in mixed doubles. The men's singles title was captured by Dan Kai of Alberta's ACAC league.
The CCAA thanks Janet Robinson and the staff at Mount Allison University for hosting this exciting event. For full results, please check the national championship web site.
