2011 CCAA Badminton Award Candidates
March 2, 2011 - The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association has announced the list of 2011 CCAA Badminton All-Canadians and candidates for the 2011 CCAA Player and Coach of the Year. Each award recipient is selected by their conference based on their performance and their contribution to sport.
Female All-Canadians and Player of the Year Candidates
RuiLin Huang – Douglas College, BCCAA
Huang competes in women’s singles and women’s doubles, racking up six individual titles and an incredible record of 45 wins and zero losses in the BCCAA league during the 2011 season.
Heather Murray – Mount Allison University, ACAA
Murray is one of the most consistent players in ACAA badminton. She will be making her third appearance at the national championships after winning both women’s singles and mixed doubles at the ACAA provincials.
Tracy Wong – Humber College, OCAA
Wong is not simply undefeated in the OCAA for both women’s singles and doubles play;she’s also a nationally-recognized player and defending champion of the junior national women’s doubles title.
Sun Yang – NAIT, ACAC
Yang competes in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles for the ACAC, giving her a 50-5 overall record. Her hard work and skill has earned her four consecutive women’s singles titles.
Male All-Canadians and Player of the Year Candidates
Justin Barkhouse – Mount Allison University, ACAA
Barkhouse is undefeated in ACAA tournament play. Now in his third year playing for the Mounties, he will compete in the national championship for the third season in a row.
Matt Chan – Mount Royal University, ACAC
Chan is a first-year student-athlete who not only competes in men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles, but also coaches numerous badminton development programs. He’ll compete in men’s doubles at the CCAA nationals.
Tim Chiu – George Brown College, OCAA
Tim competes in men’s singles events in the CCAA and the Canadian Nationals. He placed first in the OCAA East region and was recently ranked fourth among men’s singles players in Canada.
Peter Huang – Capilano University, BCCAA
After winning a gold medal in men’s doubles at last year’s CCAA national event, Huang is competing in men’s singles. He was undefeated at all BCCAA tournaments at which he competed.
Coach of the Year Candidates
Dave Cruthers – Kwantlen Polytechnic University, BCCAA
Currently nationally ranked in fifth place, the Kwantlen Eagles’ season highlight was attending the Honolulu open, coming home with 32 medals. Cruthers will see five of his players compete in the 2011 CCAA National Championships.
Kevin MacAlpine – Concordia University College of Alberta, ACAC
In addition to leading the Concordia Thunder to seventh place in national rankings, MacAlpine coaches badminton at the summer and winter games and local junior high and secondary schools. Kevin MacAlpine is proud to send five of his players to the Nationals this year.
Lynn Michel – College Boréal, OCAA
A Boreal head coach since 2011, Michel strives to inspire her athletes. Her players include the Sudbury Kinsmen amateur athlete of the year, a Junior National competitor, and several OCAA medal-winners. The Boreal Vipères are ranked in tenth place.
Sam Stewart – University of King’s College, ACAA
Three of Stewart’s players will compete in the 2011 Nationals; his team is currently ranked twelfth in Canada. When not coaching the Blue Devils, Stewart volunteers with the Nova Scotia Badminton Association and helped to organize the Canada Games tournament.
