Kevin MacAlpine named 2011 CCAA Badminton Coach of the Year

COY_BAD200March 2, 2011 – Kevin MacAlpine is the 2011 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Badminton Coach of the Year. MacAlpine coaches the Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder in Edmonton, Alberta.


The Concordia Thunder had a solid second-place finish in the ACAC league, and will send five players to the CCAA Badminton Nationals to compete in men and women’s singles and women’s doubles.

In addition to CUCA, MacAlpine coaches at the summer and winter games and  local junior high and secondary schools. “I want to continue improving and learning as a coach,” he stated. “I hope to pass my knowledge on to younger athletes and excite them about the sport of badminton. I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned to younger athletes so they can get a head start.”

Both a coach and secondary-school teacher, MacAlpine trained four high school players that went on to play at CUCA in the ACAC league. He hopes to someday start his own junior badminton club.

The other nominees for Badminton Coach of the Year were Dave Cruthers of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Lynn Michel of College Boréal, and Sam Stewart of University of King’s College.

MacAlpine received the award Wednesday, March 2 during the CCAA All Canadian banquet at the CCAA Badminton Championship in Sackville, N.B.  Coach of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
