2011 CCAA Provincial Badminton Results Roll In
February 14, 2011 - Provincial badminton championship tournaments were held in British Columbia, Alberta and Atlantic Canada this past weekend, determining who will compete at the CCAA National Badminton Championships at Mount Allison University in March.
ACAA
For a third consecutive year, the Mount Allison University Mounties captured the ACAA provincial badminton championships.
Mount Allison captured 40 points of a possible 50 by winning three first-place categories including mixed doubles, men's doubles, and women's singles. The University of King's College (UKC) finished second with 33 points and two first-place finishes in men's singles and women's doubles, while Université Ste. Anne had 29 points, and Holland College finished with 23.
The ACAA championship team will consist of men’s doubles winners Bryan Downey and Eric Freeman, mixed doubles championships Justin Barkhouse and Heather Murray, and women’s single player Lori McKnight all of the Mount Allison Mounties. The team is rounded out by three members of the UKC squad; men’s singles player Ryan MacIntosh and women’s doubles team Rachel Nelems and Steph Burt.
ACAC
The NAIT Ooks proved they were worthy of their third-place spot in the CCAA national rankings, earning first-place finishes in four of the five events held at the ACAC provincial badminton championship at Mount Royal University in Calgary. The gold-medal winners were Sun Yang in women’s singles, Kai Dan in men’s singles, Joe Vandervet and Sinead Cheah in mixed doubles, and Jonathan Chang and Jason Chou in men’s doubles. The women’s doubles winners were Grace Box and Ellexis Lathan of Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder. The Ooks and Thunder players will be attending as a championship team, and will be accompanied by an ACAC wildcard team.
BCCAA
The Douglas College Royals’ badminton team remains dominant in the sport; the squad currently sits at first place in the national rankings and placed first overall at the BCCAA provincial badminton championships held on their home court. It’s the team’s fourth consecutive first-place finish at a provincial tournament. Douglas earned 193 points, followed by Thompson Rivers University in second with 161 points, Vancouver Island University with 129 points, Kwantlen Polytechnic University with 96 points, Langara College with 64 points, and Capilano University with 32 points.

The CCAA national badminton championships take place March 3-5 at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B. Six teams will compete in the event, comprised of championship teams from each of the four provincial associations, and wildcard teams from the BCCAA and ACAC.
