Mount Allison Wins at Home in ACAA Badminton Tournament
January 16, 2011 - Mount Allison hosted its first of three 2011 ACAA (Atlantic Colleges Athletics Association) badminton tournaments. The Mounties took first place from its ACAA opponents with a total of 82 points.
After a long day of competition on Saturday, January 15, Holland College took second place with 59 points, while Université Sainte Anne took third place with 53 points. University of King's College finished in fourth place with 49 points, and Crandall University ended the day in fifth with 22 points.
Doubles and singles categories were played with several divisions. The Mounties dominated the top divison with Bryan Downey and Lori McKnight taking 10 points each and first-place in singles, while doubles partners Justin Barkhouse / Eric Freeman and Heather Murray / Erin Stewart each earned first-place finishes.
Carrie Drake overcame all opposition in the second division winning four matches to take first place, along with doubles duo Bryan Downey and Brian Stewart, who also finished with 10 first-place points. Doubles partners McKnight and Drake lost only one match in division two to finish in second place, while Eric Freeman, ending in a three-way tie with Holland College and Université Sainte Anne, took third place while losing only one game.
In division three, Xiang Wei played to a third-place finish in men's singles while he and rookie partner Stephen Fitzpatrick ended the day in fourth place in men's doubles.
The next tournament for the Mounties will be hosted by Holland College on January 29.
Mount Allison will be host to both the conference championship on Feb 12-13, and the CCAA National Badminton Championship, March 3-5.
