2010 CCAA Badminton Athletes of the Month

AOTMgraphic1The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association announced today the CCAA Badminton Athletes of the Month for January. The CCAA Athlete of the Month program recognizes student-athletes for their outstanding event performance and athletic accomplishments during that month. Awards are presented to one male and one female student-athlete in each conference participating in the CCAA Badminton; the four conferences are Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA), Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA).

From British Columbia:

Rui lin Huang, is a second year student-athlete at Douglas College.  Rui lin has had a tremendous season so far for the Royals.  She has won 6 events and has a combined 31-0 win-loss record.  Unbeaten last year, Rui lin has extended her collegiate singles winning streak to 8 straight tournaments, without dropping a game!   Huang quietly leads by example and knows how to take care of business on the court.

BAD_Alvin_Lau

Fifth year veteran, Alvin Lau, from Douglas College has had a fantastic start to the season.  After 3 tournaments he has a combined record of 31-2, winning five individual titles.  Lau is the unquestionable leader for the Royals squad.  He shows his leadership on the court with his play and willingness to play any event with any teammate.  Off the court has the ability to make everyone comfortable, giving them the confidence to perform  at the best of their abilities.

From Alberta:
Sinead_Cheah

Sinead Cheah, is in her second year at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.  Sinead has found success this year in all three disciplines.  Recently, she captured her sixth consecutive mixed doubles title with partner Joey Vandervet, finished second in women’s doubles and landed a fifth place finish in the women’s singles event.  In only her second year on the team, Sinead has emerged as a true leader and is looking forward to representing the Ooks, as NAIT hosts this year’s CCAA National Championship.

Jie-Yung

Second year student-athlete, Jie Yung Sim, from Concordia University College of Alberta, has returned to top form.  After a disappointing finish in the first individual tournament in October, Jie-Yung concentrated on his training, working very hard the last couple of months.  Sim’s commitment paid off as he won the Singles event at the ACAC’s third tournament of the season and now has his sites set on the Nationals qualifying event.

From Ontario:

Rookie Renee Yip, from Humber College has found success on the court this year for the Hawks.  In four OCAA tournaments Renee has captured medals in all three disciplines; Singles -3 Gold; Mixed – 3 Gold/ 1 Silver; Doubles – 3 Silver.   Known for her court coverage and quickness, Renee is favoured to win an OCAA title in the event of her choice.

Dayvon

Dayvon Reid  is a first year student athlete at George Brown College.  Dayvon has represented the Huskies well this season participating in the Humber, Fanshawe and George Brown Invitational Tournaments, and medaling in each one.    So far this season Reid has captured 2 Gold and 1 Silver medals in Singles; and 1 Gold and 1 Silver medal in Doubles.

From the Atlantic:

Heather Murray, is a second year student-athlete at Mount Allison University.   Heather has been the most consistent player for the Mounties this season, dominating women’s singles to date and also taking first place in women’s doubles.  Murray repeatedly puts forth a solid performance in whatever category she plays in.

Fifth year veteran from Mount Allison University Brent Barkhouse is one of the top players in the ACAA.  Co-Captain for the Mounties, Barkhouse has consistently proven his abilities over his five years leading him to several National Championships.
