Match 1: Dawson Blues 87, St. Clair Saints 62
The 2019 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship kicked off in front of more than 200 spectators, with the Dawson Blues (RSEQ) taking on the St. Clair Saints (OCAA). Very early in the game, the Blues took the lead and never let it go.
Dawson led 49-34 at the half, and the gap would only increase in the second.
For St. Clair, Jana Kucera’s performance was particularly impressive with 23 points and 4 rebounds. For Dawson, Mackenzie Ash-Smith stood out with a total of 14 points and 10 rebounds. They both were awarded Player of the Game honours.
Match 2: Olds Broncos 61, VIU Mariners 37
The second matchup of the day featured the Olds Broncos (ACAC) and the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners of the PACWEST. The Broncos took control early on and led 24-10 after the first quarter. The Mariners were never able close the gap.
On the winning team's side, Michaela Allen-Gullion finished the game with a total of 15 points, including three 3-point shots and 7 assists. On the Mariners side, Player of the Game honours went to Avery Snider, who had 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Match 3: Dynamiques de Sainte Foy 72, MSVU Mystics 68
The official opening game of the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship was presented in a jam-packed gym. The Mount St. Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics, representatives of the ACAA quickly jumped out of the games and led the Dynamiques 24-16 after one quarter.
The Mystics held on to the lead throughout the second quarter, which ended with a 47-34 lead.
While MSVU held its lead in the third, Sainte-Foy charged back in the fourth quarter to level the score at 62-62 with 5 :52 left to play. To the large home crowd’s delight, the Dynamiques went ahead and were victorious by four points.
Nikki Arsenault was outstanding for MSVU. She played the full 40 minutes and finished with 20 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds. For the Dynamiques, Player of the Game honours went to Rosemarie Dumont, who finished the game with 20 points and 22 rebounds.
Match 4: Keyano Huskies 69, Fanshawe Falcons 66
The last game of the first round featured the Fanshawe Falcons (OCAA) and the Keyano Huskies (ACAC) in what would turn out to be a thriller.
The Huskies led by a basket after the first quarter, 24-22. The game went back and forth in a tight second quarter that resulted in a 42-39 Fanshawe lead at the half.
The Huskies regained the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter and led 55-52.
The Player of the Game for the Falcons was Chuot Angou, who scored 16 points. For the Huskies, Aliyah Johnson stood out, with 20 points, 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Also noteworthy was Moiyan Toure's performance, who finished the game with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
