Day 3 Recap from Augustana

Day 3 Recap from Augustana

With the round robin complete, the final four teams have been decided for both the women's and men's divisions at this year's CCAA Curling National Championships. Recent changes to the CCAA rules have eliminated the need for tie-breakers. The semi-finals will see the 1st place leader of the round robin take on 4th place and the 2nd and 3rd place qualifiers will square off in the other semi-final. All semi-final action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. MT Saturday morning. The winners of the semi-finals will play in the gold medal game and the losers for the bronze. Finals are slated for 2:30 p.m. MT.

Women's Draw:

The Fanshawe Falcons remained undefeated in the standings after downing the Humber Hawks 5 - 2 in this morning's draw. Lakeland Rustlers led 6 - 2 at the half and despite the Niagara Knights' efforts to come back to within 1 point coming home, Lakeland held on for the win. The Augustana Vikings tried to come back with a triple in 8 after being down 5 but the Red Deer Queens were unrelenting and came back with a deuce to finish if off after the 9th. Concordia Thunder led throughout their match with the NAIT Ooks and handshakes followed their triple in 9.

This afternoon, the Fanshawe Falcons suffered their only loss of the round robin in a close game against the Concordia Thunder. The Augustana Vikings used multiple singles to stay ahead of the Niagara Knights in a 7 - 5 finish. Both the remaining women's draws ended after the 8th end thanks to an early Humber Hawks 5-ender over the NAIT Ooks and a triple and deuce by the Red Deer Queens over the Lakeland Rustlers.

Semi-final action on Saturday morning will see #1 Fanshawe Falcons take on #4 Red Deer Queens and #2 Concordia Thunder go against #3 NAIT Ooks.

Men's Draw:

What could have resulted in another extra end game of the tournament was not to be when NAIT Ooks' last rock draw came up short of the rings handing the win to the current Men's division leader, the Red Deer Kings. Fanshawe Falcons copied the Humber Hawks take out through a narrow port in the 10th to take that game 6 - 4. Olds Broncos' deuce in the 9th was not enough to catch the Augustana Vikings 5 point lead and the Lakeland Rustlers stopped the Mohawk Mountaineers with multiple singles to inch their way to an 8 - 2 victory after 9 ends.

The final draw this afternoon ended with a nail biting extra end for the Lakeland Rustlers and NAIT Ooks. After settling for a single in the 10th, NAIT was able to cluster a few stones in the house to put pressure on Lakeland who missed their last rock run back in 11 giving NAIT the win. The Augustana Vikings were down by 1 without hammer in the 10th but were unable to set up the steal and fell victim to the Humber Hawks. Up 2 with hammer coming home, the Red Deer Kings managed to run the Mohawk Mountaineers out of rocks securing a 6 - 4 victory. Fanshawe Falcons refused to allow the Olds Broncos to get anything going maintaining the lead throughout the game ending it 7 - 4.

The Men's semi-finals on Saturday will have #1 Red Deer Kings battling #4 Mohawk Mountaineers and #2 Fanshawe Falcons clashing with #3 Humber Hawks.
