Day 2 Recap from Augustana

Day 2 Recap from Augustana

After 5 draws at the 2017 CCAA Curling National Championships, only the Fanshawe Falcons women’s team remains undefeated. With 2 games remaining, the other top 3 playoff positions on the women’s side are still up for grabs between 5 teams. Red Deer Kings lead the Men’s pack with a 4 - 1 record while the remaining 7 teams on the men’s side are still in the race for a semi-final spot.

Women’s Draw:

Red Deer Queens snuck past the Humber Hawks this morning with a last rock draw to the four foot in the tenth to win 5 - 4. With the hammer coming home and down by 1, the Niagara Knights picked up a deuce to upset Concordia Thunder 7 - 6. Lakeland Rustlers and the NAIT Ooks kept it close until the 9th end when a deuce by NAIT put them up by 3 playing the tenth securing a 9 - 6 win. A steal of 3 in the 5th end set Fanshawe Falcons well ahead of the Augustana Vikings who were unable to recover and shook hands after 8 ends.

In the afternoon draw, Lakeland Rustlers faced a 5 point deficit before pulling out all the stops scoring 4 in the 8th, a deuce in the 9th and stealing 1 in the 10th to walk away with the 10 - 8 win over the Concordia Thunder. Augustana Vikings fought back to tie the game in the 9th against the Humber Hawks but were unable to get shot with their last rock handing the 8 - 7  victory to Humber. NAIT Ooks were tied with Niagara Knights after 8 ends but NAIT’s deuce in the 9th was enough to seal the win and it only took the Fanshawe Falcons 8 ends to send the Red Deer Queens packing with a score of 6 - 2.

The 2 teams leading the women’s side played off in tonight’s draw. The NAIT Ooks trailed for most of the game and were unable to catch the Fanshawe Falcons. Augustana Vikings took a triple in the 8th end and stole a single in 9 to grab their first win of the tournament against the Lakeland Rustlers. Red Deer Queens finished off the Niagara Knights by a score of 7 - 2 after 8 ends and the Concordia Thunder stayed on top of the Humber Hawks to take the win 7 - 4.

Men’s Draw:

In an exciting extra end this morning, a last rock tap back off the 4 foot gave NAIT Ooks their 1st win and handed the Fanshawe Falcons their 1st loss in the 7 - 6 finish. Following in the footprints of their college counterparts, the Red Deer Kings drew to the 4 foot for the single in 10 to defeat the Humber Hawks. Mohawk Mountaineers showed no mercy against the Augustana Vikings with a triple steal in 6 and a deuce in 7 to end it 10 - 5 after 8 ends. After getting a triple in 6 to tie, Old Broncos gave up a triple to the Lakeland Rustlers in 7 who went onto add 2 more in 9 to close out the game 8 - 4.

The outcome of another extra end this afternoon proved no different for the Fanshawe Falcons against the Red Deer Kings. After missing a run back for shot in the 10th, Fanshawe came up heavy with their final shot in the extra to hand the win to Red Deer. NAIT Ooks and the Humber Hawks stayed tied through 8 ends but the triple for NAIT in the 9th proved to be greater than Humber’s deuce in the 10th. Augustana Vikings closed out the Lakeland Rustlers early with a 9 - 3 score and it only took the Mohawk Mountaineers 8 ends to chalk up a 7 - 3 win against the Olds Broncos.

A couple of close games in tonight’s draw saw the Mohawk Mountaineers walk away with the win over the NAIT Ooks by a solid last rock draw to the 4 foot and the Red Deer Kings hung onto their 2 point lead after 9 to overcome the Lakeland Rustlers. Augustana Vikings looked strong for the 1st half but the Fanshawe Falcons’ deuce in the 8th and single steal in the 9th shut the Vikings down. Humber Hawks led the Olds Broncos 8 - 1 at the midpoint and continued on for a 10 - 4 win after 8 ends.
