2017 CCAA Hall of Fame Inductee: Randy Nohr

Randy Nohr, who led the Langara Falcons to consecutive Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association titles in Men’s Basketball, was inducted into the CCAA Hall of Fame in the Athlete Category.

In his short time at Langara, Nohr won every team and individual award possible in the British Columbia Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA, now PACWEST) and CCAA.

The Falcons captured National titles in 1998 and 1999 – only the third team in CCAA history (Fanshawe, 1980-81 and Humber, 1991-93) to accomplish this feat. Nohr was named tournament most valuable player at each National Championship.

In 1999, his final season with the Falcons, Nohr was named a CCAA All-Canadian as well as the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. He was also named the BCCAA Athlete of the Year.

“His career can be categorized as amazing,” said Jake McCallum, Director, Athletics & Intramurals at Langara College. “Randy proved to be a consummate winner throughout his career.”

Nohr amassed back-to-back BC High School AA titles prior to his arrival at Langara. He went on to star in the CIAU (now U SPORTS) at St. Francis Xavier and was a member of Canada’s national team for four seasons.

“He led by example and proved he could take his teams to the highest possible level, year after year,” said McCallum. “I believe his accolades speak volumes as to his effectiveness as a player and leader and to the respect he garnered for opposing coaches and his peers.”

Nohr has nothing but fond memories of his time in the BCCAA and CCAA – and playing for coach Kevin Hanson.

“It gave me the opportunity to play with some great players and an amazing coach,” said Nohr. “I made some great friendships.”

At CCAA Nationals, Langara quickly developed a great rivalry with Dawson College, who they would defeat twice in the gold-medal final – 96-90 in 1998 and 91-85 in 1999.

“We were down ten points in the semi-finals and finals both years and came back to win both,” recalls Nohr. No CCAA Men’s Basketball team has repeated since.

In addition, Langara and Dawson were named co-winners of the CCAA Fair Play Award after both National Championships.
