Zacharias named CCAA Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year

March 4, 2015 – Samantha Zacharias of Briercrest College and Seminary has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year.

Zacharias received the award this evening at the 2015 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil, QC.

“Sam is a tremendous and confident leader for our team who brings an awesome compete level to every practice and match,” said Nolan Weinmaster, Briercrest's head coach.

“Most importantly, Sam is a person of high character who really embodies the culture and values of Briercrest Athletics.”

In only her second season, Zacharias led the CCAA in overall kills (304) and kills/set (3.75).

She led the Clippers to a regular-season record of 18-6 and a second-place finish in the ACAC’s South Division, behind only the defending CCAA Champion Red Deer Queens.

The outside hitter also led the ACAC in aces and points. She destroyed a 23-year-old ACAC record with 88 service aces in a season and tied a 16-year-old record for aces in a game with 14.

Zacharias, a native of Waldheim, SK, also helped Briercrest set an ACAC record for kills in a season.

She has competed on the national level on several occasions, both at the club level and as a part of team Saskatchewan where she was co-captain on both the U16 and U18 teams.

The past two summers, Zacharias has assisted with the Briercrest Sports Camps. 

The Player of the Year recipients receive a CCAA customized ring provided by Jostens Canada.

Other nominees for the award were Kira Sutcliffe of the Capilano Blues (PACWEST), Thalia Hanniman of the Humber Hawks (OCAA), Maud Chapleau of the Élans de Garneau (RSEQ) and Meaghan MacDougall of the MSVU Mystics (ACAA).

The CCAA is a national sport organization enriching the academic experiences of student-athletes through intercollegiate sport.
