Dec. 10, 2015 – St. Clair College and its newly built SportsPlex will soon welcome the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s very best in women’s basketball.
The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association institution will host the 2016 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship March 16-19.
“St. Clair College is thrilled to host this Championship and welcomes the opportunity to showcase the talents of athletes from across Canada as part of this prominent event,” said Christina Gatto, Director of Athletics & Sports Development at St. Clair.
“Both staff and students respect the tremendous efforts the athletes have made to compete in this championship and we look forward to hosting them in our new, state-of-the-art athletic facility,” she said.
The SportsPlex, which opened in May of 2014, is an 85,000 square-foot building designed to house the Saints varsity basketball, volleyball and badminton programs. It features a 22,000 square-foot performance hardwood gymnasium floor, which can accommodate up to 12 regulation badminton courts, three FIBA regulation basketball courts and three FIVB volleyball courts.
Student-athletes will have access to the 10,000 square-foot fitness centre and they’ll also enjoy the spacious 12 team rooms, which will provide a dedicated space for the duration of the tournament.
The seating capacity of more than 2,000 spectators will allow large crowds to attend the event.
“When not on the court, teams will enjoy St. Clair’s downtown campus providing the perfect banquet facility boasting a spectacular view of the city’s beautiful waterfront,” said Gatto.
The Saints hosted CCAA National Championships in 2003 (Cross-Country Running), 2005 (Golf) and 2009 (Golf).
The 2015 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship was hosted by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC.
The CCAA is a national sport organization enriching the academic experiences of student-athletes through intercollegiate sport.
